Training Steps

Step 1: Pre-Licensing Education

Ready to become a Public Adjuster? Time to hit the books and train your brain!

In most states, passing some form of certified training is required by law. You can review the Tiger Adjusters® 50 state database on license requirements. The database includes links to every state's legal statute on public adjusting.

After reviewing your chosen state’s public adjusting laws, you will enroll in and complete a 40-hour Property and Casualty pre-licensing course that is approved by the state’s Department of Insurance.

EXAMPLE OF EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT FROM TEXAS STATE LAW

Texas law states: "Sec. 4102.057. EXAMINATION REQUIRED. (a) Except as otherwise provided by this chapter, each applicant for a license as a public insurance adjuster must, before the issuance of the license, take and pass an examination to the satisfaction of the commissioner." LINK TO STATE LAW

After you pass the course’s final exam, you will receive a Certificate of Completion. You will need the Certificate of Completion to register for the state’s Public Adjuster exam.

"Going through a Public Adjuster training course equips you with the knowledge and skills to advocate for policyholders and navigate complex insurance claims. You really have to know insurance terms to best argue a claim for a client. It’s a challenging yet rewarding journey that sharpens your attention to detail, negotiation abilities, and understanding of insurance policies."
Public Adjuster, Sheldon Sutphen

A state’s Public Adjuster exam normally asks a lot of questions about insurance law, plus state law that pertains to how a Public Adjuster conducts business. You can expect questions that center on topics such as:

It is worth noting that you can secure a Public Adjuster license in multiple states, as long as you abide by each state's law. In terms of education, many states offer a reciprocal education exchange. This means that if you pass a Public Adjuster exam in one state, a second state may accept the first's state's exam without you having to go through another course and exam.

Step 2: Post-License Education

After you register and pass your state’s Public Adjuster exam and finish securing your license, you will often face on-going educational requirements which are regulated by your state.

"Continuing education for Public Adjusters ensures you stay current with evolving state laws, insurance practices, and industry standards. It’s more than just a requirement—it's an opportunity to sharpen your expertise, maintain credibility, and better serve your clients."

As an example, in the state of Texas within the two-year period that a Public Adjuster license is valid you would have to complete 24 hours of continuing education.

EXAMPLE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FROM TEXAS STATE LAW

Texas law states: "Sec. 4102.109. CONTINUING EDUCATION. (a) Each license holder must complete at least 24 hours of continuing education during the license period. The commissioner by rule shall prescribe the requirements for continuing education courses under this section. (b) Notwithstanding Subsection (a), the commissioner may waive any continuing education requirement for a nonresident public insurance adjuster with a valid license from another state having continuing education requirements substantially equivalent to those of this state." Step 3: Additional Education

Do you know construction terms and how to effectively inspect a property to document all damage? Can you create a detailed line-by-line loss estimate that articulates every point of damage and the current cost to repair or replace building components? Do you have the negotiation skills to effectively counter-argue insurance carriers when they under-estimate damages?

State law may have required you to go through a 40-hour Property and Casualty course and exam, but the challenge is that the course is focused on insurance terms and claim law. It does not equip you to be a well-rounded Public Adjuster who is an expert in property inspection or skilled in using Xactimate software to create a Loss Estimate that will be accepted by an insurance carrier. Nor does an insurance course teach you soft-skills in negotiation, sales or marketing.
