The smoke peril in homeowners insurance covers damage caused by sudden and accidental smoke over a short period of time from sources like fire, faulty heating units, or malfunctioning appliances. It protects the home's structure and personal property from smoke-related damage. Smoke damage eligible for coverage includes incidents known as "puffback." Puffback occurs when a furnace, boiler, or similar equipment emits soot, smoke, vapors, or fumes onto covered property, resulting in damage.
However, coverage typically excludes damage from long-term exposure, agricultural operations, or industrial pollution. Note that the HO-8 (Modified Coverage) form does not cover damage if the smoke came from a fireplace.
