The falling object peril in homeowners insurance covers damage caused by objects falling onto the home, such as tree branches, debris, or other items. This coverage protects the structure of the home and, in some cases, personal property inside, provided the falling object damages the roof or walls first. It excludes damage from gradual wear or maintenance-related issues.
Coverage is provided for damage to the exterior of an insured building caused by falling objects, such as trees. Interior damage and damage to the building's contents are also covered, but only if a falling object first damages the roof or an exterior wall, creating an opening that allows the object or other debris to enter the building.
This peril does not cover damage to the falling object itself. Additionally, it excludes coverage for outdoor radio and television antennas, aerials (including lead-in wiring), masts, towers, outdoor equipment, awnings, and fences.
